Work at UPS

Published on 10/01/2026 by C. Leon

UPS is one of the few logistics employers in America where an entry-level part-time job comes with full healthcare at zero premium, a pension, and up to $25,000 in tuition help. The latest Teamsters contract pushed package handler starting pay to $21 an hour and built a clear path into full-time driver roles that can clear $170,000 a year with benefits. Here is how the roles, pay, and hiring really work.

The hourly UPS roles worth knowing

UPS runs on four hourly tracks: package handling inside the hubs, package car delivery on the street, feeder driving between facilities, and fleet maintenance. All four are union-represented in most markets, hire year-round, and need no degree.

📦
Package Handler. Load, unload, and sort in the hub. Part-time, 3 to 5 hour shifts, $21 an hour to start under the Teamsters contract. The most common way in.
🚚
Package Car Driver. Full-time street delivery, top scale near $49 an hour. Filled mostly from internal part-timers who put in the seniority time.
🚛
Feeder Driver. CDL Class A trailer routes between hubs. Higher hourly, steadier schedule, far less customer contact than residential delivery.
🔧
Automotive Technician. Keep the package cars and tractors running. Diesel or auto experience pays off here. One of the strongest hourly bands at UPS.

The UPS benefits package nobody expects from a part-time job

Most logistics employers gate healthcare behind full-time status and charge premiums. UPS does the opposite for union part-timers. Per the UPS benefits page and Teamsters contract documents:

🏥 $0 premium healthcare
Same medical, dental, and vision as full-timers, no premiums.
💰 Pension for part-timers
One of the rare US employers offering it to hourly part-time staff.
🎓 Earn & Learn
Up to $25,000 in tuition assistance for any subject.
📈 Path to driver
Full-time driver bids fill from internal part-time seniority first.

The physical reality of a UPS hub shift

⚠️ Reality check: A package handler shift is 3 to 5 hours of nonstop physical work. You will lift packages from 1 to 70 lbs (heavier with a partner), work inside trailers that match the outside temperature, and stay in motion the whole time. Most shifts run early morning or late evening. The pay and benefits are real, and so is the workload. Turnover in the first 30 days is high, so go in clear-eyed and you will be ahead of half the people who started with you.

How to get a UPS offer the same week

1
Apply through jobs-ups.com. Start with the basics, watch the short job-preview video (it filters out people who do not realize the work is physical), then finish the application.
2
Pick an overnight or twilight shift. Those slots get on-the-spot offers most often, especially during peak. If you can work those hours, you skip weeks of waiting.
3
Apply in the October-to-January window. UPS hires heavily for peak. Screening loosens, and strong performers convert to permanent in January.
4
Treat part-time as the door, not the destination. Hold the badge, hit the seniority marks, and bid early when full-time driver routes open.

Live UPS openings near you, with shift and pay details by role, are on the next page.

Pick the hub closest to home and the shift you can hold, and you could be at paid orientation before your next pay cycle ends.
